A haunting fiction from Brian O'Doherty about a poor and isolated Irish village where all the women of potentially child-bearing age mysteriously die.

"This priestly deposition develops into a grand examination of blind faith. The shiver at the end chills right down to the soul."  -  Times Literary Supplement

Returning to County Kerry, where he was born, post-war Irish exile William Maginn uncovers an astonishing tale about the tragedy of an increasingly isolated mountain village where all the women mysteriously die. The priest, Father McGreevy, struggles to cope with insoluble problems, whilst battling against the rough mountain elements, the grief and superstitions of his people, and the growing distrust of the town below.

"Both powerful and understated, reminiscent in more than one way of Conrad's Heart of Darkness... it is remarkable and haunting.:"  -  The Guardian
